A Virtual PBX (Private Branch Exchange) is like a traditional PBX, but it provides its services over the Internet. Usually the phones are VoIP adapters (also called ATA, Analog Telephone Adapters) or IP Phones.

Virtual PBXs cost a fraction of the cost of traditional PBXs, and typically offers much more features, like:

  • Voice mail
  • Interactive Voice Response
  • Directories
  • Conference calls
  • Voice Recognition
  • etc.

Many vPBX suppliers provide the services through a subscription model: a customer pays a small monthly fee per each extension leased.

Virtual PBXs rely on the Internet infrastructure, and therefore they are becoming increasingly popular as the quality of the Internet connections is getting better.
