VoIP is a major objective nowadays and in near future.

Voice over IP is the transmission of phone calls over the Internet Protocol (IP). Although it is usually associated with the open Internet, it need not be the case. Most VoIP networks are deployed over private networks, for instance, inside a company.

Many people still associate VoIP with low quality. However, quality has greatly improved over the last years, as bandwidth availability increased. In fact, over half the international traffic today runs at least partially over IP. Most carriers will use VoIP without telling its users.

VoIP has great advantages over traditional telephony. One of the obvious is the cost. But more significant is the added flexibility that it gives the users. Calls can be taken anywhere, transferred, etc. Voice mail can be integrated with emails, etc.

It is clear today that over the next 10 years most phones will be Internet based.
